If you’re undecided about the look and mood you want for your wedding day, then it’s always best to stick with something classic.

Classic means that it won’t date and that you won’t be embarrassed by your wedding photographs in years to come.

You can forget about fads and trends and focus on something timeless. Think of the style of Audrey Hepburn, the perfection of black and white photographs, the elegance of a Rolls Royce.

Black and gold is perfect for winter weddings

If sticking to red, gold and white for a winter wedding is not your thing then another Classic wedding colour theme is black and gold. This works well in the winter months, particularly around Christmas time, and can give a little more sophistication. And if you’re having an evening do then it is completely perfect.

Rather than having a wacky dress code, you could ask your guests to dress in black and gold which is much easier for them. Men can wear dinner jackets and a gold bow tie and or cummerbund and a little black dress is a wardrobe staple for women and it’s an item that they usually look and feel good wearing.

Setting the stage

It’s always a good idea to have a mood board when you’re planning your wedding colours and Pinterest is a really easy way of doing this. You can scour the Internet for inspiration and pin ideas for your black and gold big day together.

Look at save the date cards. We recommend you send these out well in advance of your wedding day to give people time to plan ahead, this is particularly important when you’re marrying in the holiday season.

For your wedding stationery you can opt for black writing on gold card or vice versa. Or maybe have gold invitations in black envelopes.

This works well for your invitations – how lovely would an invitation like that look adorning somebody’s mantelpiece?

Move on with the idea by creating a table plan in black and gold, place names, order of service and your thank you cards.

Decorating your venue

One of our experienced stylists will help you get the most out of your black and gold wedding theme, they will have gorgeous props to hand along with black chair covers with gold sashes, tablecloths and napkins.

Our stylist will also be able to add special little touches such as tying gold or black baubles to your napkins in contrasting colours. The beauty of this is that you don’t have to invest your budget in items that you’ll never use again.

You might also like to consider room draping to give your room an opulent feel. Room draping is perfect when the venue is a bit lacklustre and you want to make it look super special. Add a starlight backdrop to finish the effect.

Little touches

Think about wedding favours. If you’re getting married around Christmas time then maybe you could give everybody a special Christmas bauble for the tree – in black and gold of course.

You could also serve a gold themed cocktail when people arrive, or have a black and gold-themed sweetie table. We’re thinking dark chocolate, sweets in gold wrappers, set off by a black tablecloth with gold sash draping.

Your wedding dress

We’re not suggesting that you wear a black wedding dress (although it has been known) but maybe a traditional dress with a touch of gold running through it would work well for you. Your bridegroom and his best man could wear gold cravats and ties.

You could also of course wear gold shoes, which are a bit more practical in the long run, you’re likely to be able to wear metallic shoes over and over again unlike traditional white or cream wedding shoes
