With Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s engagement news, we thought it was time to take a close look at A-lister engagement rings.

Particularly as New Year’s Eve is a key time for couples to get engaged, when did your other half pop the question?

It’s interesting to see how many celebrities opt for a diamond rather than a coloured stone like an emerald, sapphire or ruby.

What have you chosen or what will you choose? And would you rather that your other half proposed with a ring or that you chose one together afterwards?

That is one whopper of a ring that Mariah Carey is wearing.

Michael Douglas gave Catherine Zeta Jones a classy diamond solitaire when they got engaged. It’s a good size too. She’s gone for a platinum setting and a platinum wedding ring too. A style like this never dates but a stone this size could be cumbersome at times. Although would you care too much?

Take off your engagement ring?

We were talking to an experienced jeweller about when you should take off your engagement ring and he quite emphatically said “Never”! He said that you are far more likely to lose your ring by taking it off when you wash your hands and leaving it on the side in a public cloakroom, than you are to damage it. Diamonds are incredibly hardwearing.

So the advice is wear it and enjoy it!

Losing weight before your wedding day

Many brides lose a fair bit of weight before their big day, so bear in mind that your engagement ring may well become a bit looser as a result. You really don’t want to lose it, so keep an eye on the fit and make sure that it stays snugly on your finger.

Brad Pitt gave Angelina Jolie this beautiful Art Deco inspired ring when they got engaged, with an emerald cut. If you don’t want just diamonds, perhaps think about replacing the main stone with a coloured stone, perhaps a sapphire or ruby?

Diamonds are forever and they come in different colours. We’re quite fond of this pink diamond which sold for a whopping $71.2 million to a Hong Kong jeweller. Well, it is beautiful.

Victoria and David Beckham chose a slightly different round cut for her diamond solitaire.

Justin Timberlake got on bended knee before Jessica Biel with a 6-carat diamond ring he co-designed himself. We <3 its vintage style. What’s your love story? View our upcoming catalogues at www.firststateauctions.com.au. #engagementrings #celebrityengagementrings #jewellery

Apparently Justin Timberlake designed Jessica Biel’s engagement ring himself. We love its vintage style. And the fact that he reportedly got down on one knee to propose.

Here’s a coloured stone. Halle Berry with her 4-carat emerald engagement ring that was apparently engaged with Phoenician codes to represent the couple’s love story.

This could possibly be the engagement ring to end all engagement rings. It’s the one Richard Burton bought for his fiancee Elizabeth Taylor at auction. A 33-carat Asscher cut diamond dated pre-1920’s and believed to be internally flawless. Just stunning. Where is it now we wonder?

Kate Middleton is known for her canny rewearing of clothes and we were delighted when Prince William gave her Princess Diana’s sapphire engagement ring. It was too pretty not to be in the spotlight and it looks so fantastic on Kate. That is one major sapphire too!
