How to transform a blank canvas barn venue
Apr 16, 2021
Character features, open countryside and a blank canvas are just some of the things that many couples find appealing about choosing a barn venue and we can completely understand why! Barn venues are becoming an increasingly popular choice for engaged couples looking for an alternative location for their wedding day.
This week we’re delivering you a dose of rustic charm from a recent photoshoot designed and created by our very talented stylist, Kerry from Ambience Milton Keynes & Bedford at the beautiful Cruck Barn. The venue is actually where Kerry got married at 10 years ago herself!
Due to Covid restrictions there was only a small team on board but they certainly pulled out all of the stops. A blank canvas to romantic beauty!
We spoke to Kerry to find out more about the design concept and to discover more about the day:
Styling considerations for the barn
When considering design options for the photoshoot at the Cruck Barn I wanted to create something that was timeless yet different to any of the images currently captured of the venue dressed for a wedding. We styled two separate areas at the venue. An indoor ceremony and reception along with an outdoor intimate reception to showcase what each option has to offer whilst still ensuring both of the looks were cohesive.
The outdoor barn at the venue is rarely used and with so many couples having to rethink where they will have their wedding reception, reduce their guest numbers and reassess how they see their wedding day, I wanted to create something that would inspire anyone who might be struggling.
Sage green and dusky pink colour palette
Dusky pink and pale pink are so popular with our clients right now, and I wanted to provide inspiration that would aid couples planning their special day to picture how stunning it can be when using two tones of pink and not necessarily just limiting yourself to one. I therefore used pale pink coloured table linen which allowed the dusky pink chiffon chair drapes to really stand out on the limewash chiavari chairs.
Outdoor reception styling
The outdoor barn is a long and narrow space so a banquet table setting was a must, creating a tablescape that complimented the outdoor setting and oozed romance. I opted for dried flowers in a range of bud vases, pink tapered candles in gold candle holders and crystal gold votives for an elegant twist in a rustic setting.
We all know how amazing fairy lights look when we start to lose the natural daylight so the team stayed until late in the day to capture the atmospheric setting which I think you’ll agree looks so inviting! Intimate weddings really benefit from mood lighting and the fairylights coupled with the candlelight was so romantic.
Table centrepieces and coloured table linen
For the indoor reception I wanted to incorporate florals into the design but we were conscious of working with a centrepiece that wouldn’t be obstructive so we opted for hand made thin wooden pedestals with florals arrangements displayed on top.
I wanted the florals in the centrepieces to pop and not be lost against the coloured table linen so we selected four different shades from pale pink to mauve with eucalyptus foliage.

“When Kerry approached me to join her on the shoot at Cruck Barn, I jumped at the chance.. Kerry’s attention to detail is amazing and I knew her vision would wow. She kept us informed through all the planning and her vision came to life, choosing the dress for the styling was easy as we had been given so much information.
Like so many suppliers we have not had the chance to be hands on since December so there was a real bubbly vibe on the day. The whole team joined in to create the most beautiful wedding set up guided by Kerry. It was a small team and we all bounced off each other really well. Lucy has captured the most stunning images for us all. I cant wait to be part of another shoot with Kerry and Ambience Venue Styling Milton Keynes.”
